Ryder Cup 2025: Europe Extend Lead with Dominant and Historic Foursomes Performance

By Ryder Cup Digital On September 27, 2025 16:10 UTC

Team Europe’s pursuit of a fifth Ryder Cup win on away soil was strengthened at the end of another dominant foursomes session as they opened up a 8½-3½ lead.

Holding a three-point advantage at Bethpage Black, Luke Donald’s charges won three of the four matches for the second day running in the alternate shot format amid a hostile atmosphere.

This is the first time since 1979, when a new era in the Ryder Cup was ushered in with the introduction of players from continental Europe, that an away team has won the first three sessions.

While Cameron Young, playing in his home state, teamed up with Bryson DeChambeau to win the hosts’ lone point with a 4&2 win over Matt Fitzpatrick and Ludvig Åberg, it was otherwise another birdie-filled performance for Europe.

Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood beat Harris English and Collin Morikawa 3&2, while Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton overcame Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay by the same margins as both partnerships extended their winning records.

The final match of the day went to the wire, with Viktor Hovland and Robert MacIntyre sealing a hard-fought 1 UP win against Russell Henley and Scottie Scheffler, who has now lost all three matches he has played.

"That was big," said Hovland, who holed a crucial par putt to ensure Europe retained their leading heading to the last.

"Hit a terrible eight iron there to spin it back down the hill and left Bob in a tough spot there. But was glad I was able to contribute on that hole and at least secure half a point and obviously getting the job done on 18 was incredible. It was a great match all day."

After insisting he would not be deviated from his “plan” despite a demoralising opening day, U.S. skipper Bradley made just one alteration to his foursomes line-up with rookie Young brought in to play alongside DeChambeau as Donald went unchanged.

A more raucous atmosphere awaited the players by comparison to Friday’s morning foursomes, with Bradley saying in an interview on the first tee he was confident of a fightback from his side.

After the dramatic climax to Friday’s four-balls, there were fireworks from the off on Saturday as the top match was halved on the first as Young hit a fine pitch to concession range before Åberg holed from 11 feet for a birdie too.

There was some early red put on the leaderboard though, with English giving the United States a win at the first after McIlroy had lipped out for a chip-in birdie.

But, aside from that, it was the visitors who were building on the momentum from the opening day, with Hatton and Rahm flying out of the blocks against Schauffele and Cantlay, the lone winning U.S. pairing from Friday’s foursomes.

Having fallen behind for the first time at the Ryder Cup in the format, it wasn’t long before Fleetwood and McIlroy were ahead as they made birdies at the second and third.

Clearly revelling in the atmosphere in his home state, Young chipped in for a birdie at the par-three third to give the United States a lead in the top match but that was immediately lost when DeChambeau missed a par putt at the fourth.

And with MacIntyre putting Europe up in the bottom match through a birdie at the second, there was no red at all on the leaderboard as the early noise from the U.S. crowds had dropped noticeably.

McIlroy holed from 20 feet for birdie at the fifth to put Europe 2 UP in the second match, but elsewhere there were more positive signs from Bradley’s charges.

After holing a five-foot birdie putt at the seventh to level up proceedings in the top match, Young hit a towering tee shot to concession range to give the U.S. a 2 UP lead.

In the stand-out match of the session, Schauffele and Cantlay capitalised on a rare lapse in focus by Hatton and Rahm to draw level with pars at the fifth and seventh.

But, with the tide perhaps turning, up stepped former World Number One Rahm to produce a piece of magic, chipping in from the rough around a greenside bunker at the eighth to give Europe an unlikely win and reestablish a narrow lead.

It was nip and tuck too in the bottom match, with Henley holing from eight feet at the sixth to halve the hosts’ deficit but Europe were back 2 UP when Hovland holed from the fringe to the delight of an animated MacIntyre who was happy to engage with the crowds.

But in the top match, DeChambeau and Young were keeping their foot to the pedal and moved three ahead at the tenth and the momentum was beginning to shift elsewhere.

With the United States needing their best player to come to the fore, Scheffler clicked into gear after the turn as he holed a 15-foot birdie putt at the 11th and then hit an approach to inside of ten feet at the 13th from which Henley converted to bring the hosts level.

An uncharacteristic three putt by Europe gifted English and Morikawa the 14th, and the U.S. pair were celebrating another win at the 15th to reduce their deficit to 2 down.

Moments earlier, DeChambeau and Young claimed the first point of the morning with a convincing win in the top match at the 16th.

“For our country, it was just pedal to the metal,” said DeChambeau. “Cam played unbelievable today.

“We struck it well, we executed when we needed to and we just put the pressure on them all day. They struggled to get momentum, and when we had our opportunities, we took advantage.”

With the crowds becoming ever rowdier, McIlroy had to call for some to tone down their heckling, but he quickly regained his composure and hit his approach to four feet from which Fleetwood converted to seal a deserved, if belated, victory.

“We played phenomenally well for 12 of the holes and for the next few holes it was like we were always kind of one golf shot away from the match being over,” said Fleetwood, who has now won all six of his matches in foursomes at the Ryder Cup. “I made a hash of a couple of things.

“I just think where we put ourselves, obviously it made it very difficult for them, they played great towards the end there. Having that buffer there and that lead helped massively, and then Rory hitting that shot on the last, so that was good.”

It wasn't long before Europe claimed their second point of the day through the tried and tested Hatton and Rahm combination.

Having doubled their lead at the 12th, the European pairing withstood some pressure from Cantlay and Schauffele before an excellent approach by Rahm to five feet all but wrapped up the win.

The anchor match reached a dramatic crescendo, with Europe holding onto their 1 UP lead with a clutch par putt from 12 feet through Hovland to ensure the visitors would at least win the session.

But when Scheffler miscued his approach at the 18th from the fairway and Hovland found the green, victory was essentially secured to round out a brilliant European session.
