Ryder Cup 2025: Saturday Foursomes Match Recaps

By Ryder Cup Digital On September 27, 2025 17:20 UTC

Team Europe made further Ryder Cup history as they opened up a five-point lead after Saturday's morning foursomes session.

After winning the opening session on away soil for the first time since 2004, the visitors have now become the first side to win the first three sessions on away soil in the Team Europe era.

In claiming the second batch of foursomes 3-1 for a second day running, they moved a step closer to a fifth Ryder Cup win on the road and first since 2012.

Here, let's take a look at a dramatic morning session.

Day 2 Afternoon Foursomes

Match 1: Bryson DeChambeau & Cameron Young bt Ludvig Åberg & Matt Fitzpatrick 4&2

The tone was immediately set for another absorbing session in the opening match, with Young hitting an approach to concession range before Åberg holed from 11 feet for a birdie to ensure a half. Young, who starred in Friday’s four-balls, appeared inspired playing in his home state and he produced an early highlight reel moment with a chip-in birdie at the third. DeChambeau missed a par putt at the next but the hosts’ lead was re-established at the seventh, when Young converted from four feet for a par after a first bogey of the day for the Europeans. The lead was then doubled moments later at the eighth through a towering iron shot by Young as Åberg missed from five feet for the half. The ninth was halved in birdie threes, before DeChambeau was left to roll in a par putt from six feet to take the United States 3 UP after a poorly executed hole by the Europeans at the tenth. With the next five holes halved in pars, Young then holed an 11-foot birdie putt for a resounding victory.

"It's been awesome," said Young of his Ryder Cup debut so far. "I've been fortunate to have two great partners thus far, and we'd love to be giving the fans a bit more of a reason to be going nuts, but I think that's still coming."

DeChambeau added: "Cam played unbelievable today. We struck it well, we executed when we needed to and we just put the pressure on them all day. They struggled to get momentum, and when we had our opportunities, we took advantage."

Match 2: Tommy Fleetwood & Rory McIlroy bt Harris English & Collin Morikawa 3&2

In a repeat match from Friday’s foursomes, the unbeaten duo of Fleetwood and McIlroy came in as strong favourites after a dominant 5&4 win on day one. But, after McIlroy lipped out for a chip-in birdie at the first, English holed from 15 feet for a birdie and an early win. It meant the European duo were behind for the first time since the formation of their foursomes pairing in Rome two years ago. It wasn’t long though before the match was tied, with Fleetwood holing from 30 feet at the second for a birdie and the scoreline was flipped completely when the Englishman capitalised on a laser-like tee shot by McIlroy at the third. Either side of a battling half at the sixth, Europe took control with wins at the fifth and seventh, the latter through Fleetwood’s putter. When Fleetwood hit the flag with his approach and saw his ball spin back to concession range at the 11th, the American pairing could have been forgiven for wondering what else they could do. But English holed from six feet to secure a tie after a fine approach by Morikawa. The European duo landed their sixth birdie of the day at the 12th to retain their 4 Up lead against the Americans, who were giving it their best. A poor three-putt by Europe at the 14th offered the hosts some faint hope which increased when English holed from 15 feet for birdie to win the 15th. But just as the American crowds were getting rowdier, resulting in McIlroy rebuking some fans, the Northern Irishman hit his approach to inside five feet to all but end the match at the 16th.

"Our games match nicely," said Fleetwood. "Obviously we're very close off the course. Like Rory has already said, our families are so close. I'm just the lucky one that gets to play with him in foursomes and I'll take that, anyway."

McIlroy added: "The feeling is absolutely mutual. It's an absolute pleasure to play alongside him and we had a great time in Rome and we've been able to back that up with two great wins here. Excited with where our team is and we have to keep the foot down."

Match 3: Tyrrell Hatton & Jon Rahm bt Patrick Cantlay & Xander Schauffele 3&2

Billed by many as the standout match of the session, the formidable European duo of Hatton and Rahm – who like Fleetwood and McIlroy held a perfect record from their three previous foursomes matches – were quick out of the blocks. A stellar approach by Hatton finished inches away from the pin at the first, before a par was good enough at the second. After the third was halved in excellent twos, the hosts halved the deficit though a three-putt by the Europeans at the fifth. In great match play style, with the Europeans in closest at the seventh, the U.S. duo levelled proceedings when Cantlay holed for birdie before Hatton missed from a similar line. Rahm then produced one of the best shots of recent Ryder Cup history to put Europe back ahead at the par three eighth, making light of playing out of the rough while in a greenside bunker. Europe's lead was doubled at the 12th, before Rahm produced another outstanding approach to leave Hatton to tidy up and seal victory at the 16th.

"It feels amazing to win our point this morning," said Hatton. "Against two incredible players. Ultimately, we've gone out there with a job to try and win a point for Europe. Just so happy that we are able to do that. "

Speaking of his 6-0 foursomes record, Rahm said: "I don't know what else to say. It's a joy to be able to play with them. We've shared the golf course for many, many holes, and it's absolutely incredible watching him play, and what he did on the greens today was nothing short of spectacular. At one point, we were basically out of the fairway and out of the green. We just somehow stayed in and stayed in and won some holes at the end."

Match 4: Viktor Hovland & Robert MacIntyre bt Russell Henley & Scottie Scheffler 1 UP

The first has proved a relative gift so far, and both teams made birdies in the anchor match through in large part to great approaches by MacIntyre and Henley respectively. The European pairing of Hovland and MacIntyre managed just two birdies together on Friday, but it only took two holes on Saturday morning to reach that number as MacIntyre holed from just inside of 20 feet. Scheffler and Henley were struggling to gel, and a missed green by the latter helped the Europeans lead by two through the fifth. But Henley, up at a career-high third in the world, holed from inside of ten feet at the sixth to halve the deficit. MacIntyre regained Europe's 2 UP advantage though when he birdied the eighth, turning to the American fans as he sought to engage with the crowds. But after the turn, Scheffler found his groove and played a key part in the U.S. winning both the 11th and 13th. Having teamed up for the first time in a Ryder Cup only this week, MacIntyre set up Hovland to win the par-three 14th and put Europe back ahead. Then came a crucial moment at the 17th, with Henley first missing a good look at birdie before Hovland nervously holed a challenging par putt from the back of the green to ensure at least a half point. But, after Scheffler missed the green at the last, MacIntyre could afford to roll his birdie putt to concession range and seal another session in favour of Europe.

"It's so good," said Hovland at his feeling of Europe's performance so far in his second Ryder Cup on away soil. "Especially after Rome, it kind of went as good as it could have gone for our team. But we were very motivated to do the same over here. So far, we're doing the job, but there's still a long ways to go and we've just got to keep our foot down and keep playing well.

"It's brilliant," said MacIntyre. "We've known each other since we were young. Played against each other at times, as well. Look, to be able to play in these golf tournaments is special for the two of us. It's what dreams are made of. We've come here. We've got a job to do, and we're trying our best. You've got to enjoy yourself."
